Job Description: Seasonal Laborer 1

Scope:

1. The seasonal landscape laborer will perform frequent and continual, heavy lifting, sometimes, in excess of 75 lbs. There will also be prolonged physically, strenuous manual labor during hot summer months on construction sites. Winter work in cold, wet, muddy conditions may also be encountered.

2. Site clean up and manual trenching into hard soil with shovels and picks.

3. Loading, unloading, and installing heavy rock, heavy soil and soil amendments, heavy plant material, and plant debris.

4. If qualified, the laborer may install irrigation material, low voltage lighting, and other landscape related materials.

5. On occasion, if qualified, the laborer might operate power equipment like jack hammers, trenchers, and rototills. However, a significant share of time will be spent doing heavy, manual work in awkward positions and challenging weather conditions that involve heat and cold.

6 Commercial and residential landscape maintenance may also be performed.

Minimum qualifications:

1. Ability to work unsupervised.

2. Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English

3. Ability to follow safety policy and to avoid safety hazards on a construction site

4. Negative alcohol and drug tests

5. Passing criminal background, verification of ID and social security number, and, if necessary, a credit check.

6. At least one year of verifiable, heavy manual labor experience in high temperatures.

7. Own transportation to jobsite is required. Job location will vary and may include sites outside Sacramento County. Oil and other leaks from cars are to be caught with metal oil catching devices that leave no trace.

Hourly wage: The laborer position will be paid by paycheck. Lay off due to work shortage or poor weather is likely. There is no sick pay. There is no health insurance or other employee benefits. There will be no employee pay advances.

Probationary period: Sacramento Landscape Company will not change employment status from seasonal worker to permanent employment status until enough time has elapsed to determine how well the seasonal laborer fits in the operation of the Sacramento Landscape Company. Probationary period may last longer than 12 months depending on the number of seasonal hours employed during the first twelve months. Under no circumstances will status change until Sacramento Landscape Company informs the employee of change of status.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Employees are assigned duties and responsibilities commensurate with their background and training.

2. Notifying employer of inability to work as scheduled is mandatory. One excused absence per month with three total excused absences per year is allowed. Failure to notify employer of inability to work or going over number of allowed absences will very likely result in termination.

3. Safe work practices will be required and will be the number one priority over all other responsibilities. NO time schedule is more important than safety. All applicants for employment with the Sacramento Landscape Company are expected to be and to maintain an alcohol-free and drug-free condition. There will be zero tolerance for alcohol or drug abuse. Drug testing will be at the option of the Sacramento Landscape Company. As part of the employment application, the employee agrees to drug testing.

4. It is the responsibility of the employee to inform treating physicians or psychiatrists that equipment will be operated, heavy lifting will occur, and prolonged extreme heat or wet, cold conditions will be encountered. Certain physical conditions, medications or treatments make this work unsafe to self and others.

5. Adequate sleep is necessary to avoid fatigue while operating equipment or handling tools. It is the responsibility of the employee to obtain adequate sleep the night before a work day.

6. All employees will be expected to be courteous to customers, suppliers, and other individuals with whom they come in contact.

No smoking is allowed on customer property.

Prospective applicants:

Thank you for your interest in employment with the Sacramento Landscape Company. We are a small installation and commercial maintenance company. Only one or two employees will be initially hired. There will be no winter work. It is also possible layoffs will occur during other times of the year. Furthermore, some days you will work less than eight hours or not at all. There are no plans to offer health insurance this year. On the plus side, since we are small, work will probably involve a variety of duties and result in your training and development in landscape construction and maintenance. Also, since we are small, every employee is an important, valued, part of the success and future of the Sacramento Landscape Company. Committed, responsible, hard working, employees who demonstrate willingness to learn and show teamwork will likely have more success as an employee. Please note that given your importance of your role in a smaller company, expectations and supervision may be higher than what you experienced with larger landscape contractors.

There are lots of forms to read and complete. There are more than you probably have ever seen from a landscape contractor. Take your time. Read them thoroughly, complete all relevant questions with honesty, and sign where required. Dates of prior employment and phone numbers of previous employers and personal references are especially important.

Feel free to attach letters explaining special circumstances or inability to contact prior employers. Again thanks for your interest. If it is apparent that you will be a good prospect for the Sacramento Landscape Company, you will be contacted for an interview within 14 days of receipt by Sacramento Landscape Company of your completed packet.
